Welcome
We extend a warm welcome to all either holding a Amateur Radio Licence or who are interested in joining in on our world-wide hobby. There is no age restriction, although we ask that those under 16 should bring along a parent/guardian (who can be a handy taxi service!)
Whilst our main interest is in Amateur Radio, many members have extended their interests to include IT as most modern rigs are capable of Computer Aided Control using a PC and a variety of electronics projects.
As with any club of like-minded people, our interests are based upon the interests of individual members, which includes historic radio equipment (known to our American cousins as "boat anchors"), design and construction (home brew; nothing to do with brewing beer unfortunately), low power transmitters (QRP), Digital Voice, Morse (CW), Slow Scan TV (SSTV), antenna design etc.
We also have several members who are active in the local Exeter Area RAYNET group. RAYNET is the UK amateur radio emergency communications organisation that provides not only emergency communications at times of local or national emergency but also assist in public events such as runs and walks.
We meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 19:00hrs local time.
On the 1st Wednesday of each month we try to have a technical talk and/or demonstration on some aspect of Amateur Radio, IT and electronics. Past talks and demonstrations have included PCB construction, software designed radio, antenna designs, software for circuit design, software for computer aided control of rigs, emerging modes including QRSS (very slow, very low power CW), DSB (double side band) and interconnection over the Internet using Digital Voice and Echolink, existing modes including EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) aka Moonbounce communications, Satellite Communications, SSTV, FSTV, PSK31, use of repeaters, and revisiting older modes such as CW and AM.
On the 3rd Wednesday of each month we aim to have an operating night with any ad hoc events that have not been scheduled and members want to share with others.
We encourage members to bring along their newly acquired equipment so that all can become familar with its use and operations, an important aspect as modern rigs have multiple menus that always take time to master.

In 2011 our antennas gave given us some heartache as we have to provide a safe environment in the Scout Hut as others also use it, in particular, toddlers with inquisitive fingers! We have now found a solution and will be shortly installing a 4m yagi to be connected to our donated 4m rig. We will then be on-the-air on all bands from 160m to 70cm.
We have still not found a satisfactory solution to the problem of background chatter (who would dare, or even want to try and stop club members talking to each other!) which troubles all who operate within our single room with poor acoustics and noisy electric fan heaters - well, at least we do not suffer external electrical noise and have a good antenna site!
